The Kalalau Trail is a trail along Nā Pali Coast of the island of Kauai in the state of Hawaii. The trail runs approximately 11 miles (18 km) along the island’s north. Head up the stream to the right, and follow the trail all the way to Hanakapi’ai falls. Explore by Hawaiian Island Kauai. Permits are currently not for sale. No body wants to ttail anyone get hurt. Portions of the trail in this section are very narrow and the drop-off on the ocean side is severe. If you can’t or don’t want to day hike to Hanakapiai Beach, at least try to make it to this overlook one-mile round trip.

Any bookstore should have a book about backpacking, something where you can learn about equipment and planning. Hiked in and out in 2 days. Of course, if you grew up hiking to Kalalau and back, then it is a nice place to take a break and have a snack just make sure that there are no mountain goats crossing above you, as rock fall from goats can be quite dangerous.

We applied and received our hiking permit nearly 6 months in advance. After the first leg of the climb, at about half a mile, you emerge on a red dirt path that borders the cliffside overlooking the gorgeous NaPali Coast. The trail begins after the Hanakoa stream crossing, just before the covered shelter. The thing that surprised me about the hike was how hard it was. Crawlers ledge was also a little wet and slick when we hiked that section but we nap the mud off our shoes and used caution and we made the crossing. I found it very hard to find good information on the Internet about the trail. At mile 2, the trail leaves the beach and heads up a strenuous climb for about the next mile.
