Even Sister Aloysius must be circumspect in how she proceeds with her accusations, knowing that they could be easily ignored by her male superiors within the church. It’s been polished until it’s a mirror of perfect clarity, forcing the audience to regard its own reflection. Gripping drama all the way! Of course though, the main theme of this play is “doubt” and the playwright purposely leaves you and the characters in doubt as to whether or pagrick a sin was actually committed.
How often do we interpret things through our own preconceived notions, then influence others with our beliefs? Rather the story and writing constantly raises questions by causing one to stop and think.

The play makes one realize that life is much more grey than white and black – murky sort of. Whether he did it or not is not really the focus of this play.

Aloysius and Father Flynn are put into direct conflict shanleyy she learns from Sister James that the priest met one-on-one with Donald Muller, St. We then encounter Sister James, a bright, enthusiastic teacher with the Sisters of Charity in the Bronx. Plays can be great, since they really do need to skip all parbale of narration, descriptions of scenery, etc.

I think this conundrum is the integral ingredient that makes the play work. There is no last word, Shanley says, not even in a church, an indeterminate distance short of Heaven.

Lots to think about and discuss. Nothing is ever spelled out, but Donald’s mother is clear on one thing – Donald is different. But the larger grappling with existential doubt is what makes this play more mature and unsettling than the average Afterschool Special.
The story is,for me, tragic. They will see that choosing sides is never so easy as rallying to a cause against this or that irredeemable force.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — reading a play doesn’t give you the nuance you get when joohn participate in or watch a performance.
